Isn’t She Beautiful (1)

The first session of Mars Hill’s “Isn’t She Beautiful” conference is in intermission.
Here are a few quick thoughts:
1) The building is almost entirely unadorned. It’s a converted shopping mall filled with chairs. The Toys-R-Us sign is intact, and I’ve not yet seen anything that said “Mars Hill” on it save for the single sheet of paper I received at registration. As such, it was a tad difficult to find.
2) Everyone looks familiar. I’m generalizing here, but here’s what I see: most are men, 20s-30s. Most have facial hair, and it is invariably well-groomed. Those with glasses wear trendy glasses. Lots of t-shirts, casual dress-shirts, blue jeans, and khakis. I’ve seen several Motorola RAZR’s. The row of 15 chairs behind me has four MacBooks and one MacBook Pro. A few looked like staff members of a church I worked with this past summer in Oregon, but were not.
3) There are three bathrooms with one fixture each. Lines are gigantic.
4) Rob Bell’s “opening keynote,” called “This lovely, frustrating, intoxicating, painful, hard, compelling mtsyery called church and why she’s worth dying for” was incredibly engaging, loaded with stories, references to scripture, Greek words, and humor. I have a good set of notes; e-mail me if you’re interested in hearing more.
More later.
