LocalCooling Fights Global Warming with Software

There is a growing ecological consciousness among many evangelical and emerging congregations today. Faced with a lingering desire to do something about issues such as global climate change, peak oil, and resource use, many struggle to come up with simple, concrete ideas to act on.
Today, I stumbled upon a handy PC app called LocalCooling. Here’s the idea:
The average computer costs between $4.54 and $6.00 per month to power, but many PCs are left to run 24/7 while only in use three to eight hours each day. This might not make much of a difference for your personal energy usage, but in an office with 20 PCs running 24/7, simply turning them off in the evening could save up to $80.40 each month (20*6.00*0.67).
Realizing this, a couple developers created a (Windows XP-only) application called LocalCooling that enables energy-saving features on your PC and creatively counts how much you’ve cut your energy use in terms of trees saved, gallons of oil untapped, and kilowatt hours unused.
As a Mac user, I haven’t tested this (beta) software, but the premise is certainly interesting. As always, your mileage may vary.
